FIU Online Insider Diversity Statement
One of the primary advantages of online learning is its massive potential for expanding access to education. With that reach comes a great responsibility to address the sobering inequities of our time––not least systemic racism, gender discrimination, classcism, ableism, among others.
As online educators associated with the ever diversifying Florida International University, the FIU Online Insider pledges to participate in the following renewed efforts at the FIU Division of Diversity Equity & Inclusion:
“…ensuring instruction and services are delivered in a manner that is reflective and supportive of diversity as it relates to gender, socioeconomic status, gender identity, race, ethnicity, physical and mental ability, nationality, military status, sexual orientation, spirituality and cultural identity.”
More precisely, Insider promises to offer more content that promotes critical and culturally responsive instructional design by:
- Keeping up with the latest research about online education, instructional design, and instructional technologies pertaining to social inequities and diversity;
- Sharing practical insights with our readers for dismantling discriminatory barriers in online learning;
- Attuning ourselves to the potentially marginalizing features of technologies and modes of instructional delivery, and seeking to ameliorate those harms in our articles;
- Making sure that the Insider committee is as diverse as the faculty, staff, and learners we serve.
These are just first steps; there’s always more we can do. Insider welcomes readers who will hold us accountable to the commitments above, and to offer us further suggestions, critiques, and corrections.
The FIU Online Insider believes sound online instructional practices can create educational environments where everyone counts. We aim to do our part.
