FIU Student Email Migrates to M365

As part of Florida International University’s continued efforts to improve the technology experience and security, the Division of IT will be transitioning our student email system to Microsoft 365 (M365). Microsoft 365 was previously known as Office 365. Additionally, alumni, retirees, and any accounts that use Google mail (Gmail) will also be transitioned. This will be done in a phased approach and completed by late Spring/early Summer 2022.

Currently, our student email is hosted in Google and our employee email is hosted in Microsoft 365. Having both our student and faculty/staff email in one environment will enable us to operate more efficiently under one platform and provide improved security that will help users mitigate spam, phishing, and other potential IT security incidents. It will also provide better collaboration and efficiency within the FIU community. Microsoft 365 will also provide more access to the latest technology and provide students with hands-on experience with other tools they may need when entering the workforce.

As part of the transition, students will also have access to Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is a software application that can be used to communicate and collaborate with peers on a shared project or to create a shared workspace. It offers chats, unlimited video meetings, and file storage.
