Join the Fix Your Content Day Accessibility Challenge

Challenge accepted; fix your content; Blackboard Ally

In our continued commitment to providing students an inclusive learning environment, FIU is participating in the nationwide Fix Your Content Challenge on Thursday, May 20th, 2021. On that day, we are asking all faculty to use Ally to identify and fix course content to meet accessibility standards.

Ally is an accessibility tool that is integrated into Canvas courses and automatically alerts you to issues of accessibility and provides detailed guidance to instructors on how to improve student accessibility in course design, available content, and course materials.

About the FYCD Accessibility Challenge

May 20th marks the annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day and as part of our campus-wide commitment to inclusive education, we are participating in our first ever Ally Fix your Content Day. For 24-hours from 12:01 am to 11:59 pm EST, FIU will be on a mission to fix as many accessibility issues with Canvas course files as we can. At the end of the day, the campus with the most files fixed will be recognized and awarded a prize.

Learn More About Ally

Review the quick “how-to” tutorials on the FYCD site to prepare for May 20th or watch the pre-event session held on May 13 recording to learn how to make content accessible. Start clicking those red and orange Ally indicators in your Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 courses and identify content with the following common accessibility issues:

  • Images: Images that need alt text and images in documents without descriptions
  • Headings: Documents and tables that do not have any headings, and
  • Documents: Documents without tags, titles, and/or a set language.

On Fix Your Content Day, upload newly accessible content and files to your Canvas course. Aim for 100% accessibility score but improvement is what counts!
