Each year, FIU participates in a community-wide Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP). This program runs in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. SYIP connects high school students with paid part-time internship opportunities across the university. This exposes them to the world of higher education administration. Additionally, it helps them gain invaluable skills that can be applied to future careers. This summer, FIU Online welcomed three remarkable interns to the Learning Design Innovation team.
Introducing our FIU Online Interns
Over the course of five weeks, interns Alex, Gian and Vik supported the FIU Online team with several projects. These unique Learning Design projects were in the area of educational technology tools, team & faculty development, and multimedia asset production.
“My experience with FIU Online’s Learning Design Innovation team was simply unforgettable. I have grown and learned so much from just the five weeks that I was here. I will be carrying all of the techniques and software that I learned about, far into my life.”
Intern Gian
Our interns received a crash course in several of our most utilized edtech tools, including H5P and Playposit. They used their new skill sets to create helpful guides and sample artifacts for future faculty development. Also, they received training on accessibility, and aided in the creation of accessible content samples.
One of the more unique tasks the interns took on was capturing drone video footage of Florida International University’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus. These video assets will be shared with faculty as a resource for PlayPosit Broadcast interactions, as well as background footage for webinars and asynchronous virtual lectures.
“Throughout my brief time working under amazing people like Maikel Alendy and the other incredible supervisors I had, I learned how to navigate programs I’d never used before like H5P, Genial.ly and Canva. The time I spent here helped me familiarize myself with different online programs. Also, it taught me critical thinking and how to deliver work on-time and efficiently.”
Intern Vik
