FIU Online presents 3 sessions, wins award at Online Learning Consortium Conference

The FIU Online Team was invited to present a total of three sessions at the 2017 Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Accelerate conference in Orlando, Florida.

The OLC Accelerate conference “is devoted to driving quality online learning, advancing best practice guidance and accelerating innovation in learning for academic leaders, educators, administrators, online learning professionals and organizations around the world.”

The Online Learning Consortium also hosts a second national conference, OLC Innovate and smaller regional events under the OLC Collaborate name.

Presentation Sessions

On Wednesday afternoon, Jessica Rodriguez (Online Quality Manager) and Gus Roque (Educational Technology Manager) presented a discovery session titled “Creating Comprehensive Professional Development for a Large Instructional Design Team”. They highlighted FIU Online’s “IDCC”, a professional development program for our instructional designers. They discussed the program and its benefits to those who attended the session.

On Thursday morning, Daniel Cespedes (Data Analyst) and Andrea Garcia (Data Analyst) presented “The Power of Analytics: Influencing Student Growth and Retention”. This session showcased how FIU Online is using data to ensure students are performing well and graduating.

Finally, on Friday morning, Gus Roque (Educational Technology Manager) and David-John Palmer (Associate Director of Instructional Design & Media) presented on FIU’s affordability initiative in a session titled “Affordability Counts.” This session addressed the Affordability Counts program and how this unique approach encourages faculty to save students money.

OLC Effective Practice Award

On Thursday afternoon, the “Affordability Counts” program was awarded an OLC Effective Practice Award.

This peer-reviewed award recognizes effective techniques, strategies, and practices that are shared by members of the Online Learning Consortium community to advance quality and access to online learning.

Technology Test Kitchen Podcast

As part of winning the OLC Effective Practice Award, FIU Online was invited to record a short podcast on Affordability Counts.

A recording booth was set up right in the heart of the conference expo. Gus Roque and David-John got a chance to sit down and discuss the Affordability Counts program.
