FIU Online Presents at 2017 ATD Conference

2017 ATD Conference

FIU Online was invited to present a concurrent session at the ATD 2017 International Conference & Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the largest event for talent development professionals worldwide. This year’s conference had over 10,000 attendees and over 300 sessions to attend.

Matthew Acevedo (Instructional Design Manager), Jessica Rodriguez (Online Quality Manager) and Gus Roque (Educational Technology Manager) facilitated the session titled “Creating a Comprehensive Professional Development Program for a Large Instructional Design Team“. The session was part of the ‘Higher Education’ industry track.

This session covered FIU Online’s efforts toward planning and implementing the Instructional Designer Core Curriculum (IDCC), a comprehensive professional development initiative for its instructional design team. The session also presented the results of a research study into the perceptions and effectiveness of the IDCC program.

Instructional Design Core Curriculum (IDCC)

The IDCC is the ongoing professional development program for FIU Online’s instructional designers and instructional design assistants, providing opportunities for professional growth in the strands of:

  • Educational Technology
  • Instructional Design Theory and Practice
  • Project Management and Leadership
  • Faculty Collaboration and Service Excellence.

The IDCC is designed to promote expertise in these four strands in a way that leverages areas of individual strength, potential, need, and interest. Instructional designers and instructional design assistants can earn IDCC credit through face-to-face trainings, webinars, MOOCs, books, or they may design their own experience in collaboration with their Lead Instructional Designers. Certain departmental contributions, such as facilitating IDCC sessions or publishing on the FIU Online Insider Newsletter can also contribute to IDCC points.

Instructional designers and assistants have a 25-point requirement as part of the IDCC.

Commitment to Effective and Engaging Courses

The IDCC was created to ensure that the instructional design team at FIU Online is prepared to fulfill our commitment of creating effective and engaging online learning experiences for all students.

Feel free to reach out to any of the Lead Instructional Designers with questions about the IDCC.

Honors College Faculty and former FIU Online Educational Technology Manager.
