Community Service: It’s an FIU Online Thing

Every year, FIU Online dedicates a staff meeting to help others. We call this FIU Online’s ‘Day of Service.’ This fall term, the FIU Online team headed out to Liberty City Elementary to help beautify the school grounds. Liberty City Elementary is a small school servicing only 327 students from Pre-K to 5th grade.

The event took place on Monday, November 6 and the work involved gardening and painting of different sites located throughout the school. The event was planned alongside Hands on Miami, a volunteer service organization, and FIU’s own Education Effect program.

The work was organized into 8 ‘projects’ which FIU Online employees could choose from. Projects ranged from repainting parking lot lines to painting childhood characters throughout the main building and painting new murals and quotes in the cafeteria.

After the work was finished, the team assembled in the school’s Media Center to receive updates from FIU Online’s leadership team and discuss upcoming departmental goals and milestones.

Throughout the day, several of the Liberty City Elementary teachers, staff and students thanked the team for coming out to the school and volunteering their time. As a team, we were honored to have spent the day volunteering at the school and look forward to other opportunities to “pay it forward.”
